Photo: Byron Hetzler, The Southern The Carterville Lions began play in the IHSA Class 3A Regionals against the Massac County Patriots on Monday night at Carbondale and the game game down to the final possession by the Lions. Down two, with 7 seconds left to play, the Lions had the length of the floor to go to try and tie the game and force overtime.  Dylan Valarius took the inbounds pass from Justin Johnson the length of the floor and got a shot off, but Isaiah Thompson was able to get a hand on it to preserve the win for the Patriots. Photo: Byron Hetzler, The Southern The Carterville Lady Lions won their Class 3A Regional championship just a week ago at home with a win over Murphysboro. This week they advance to sectionals to take on a very talented East St. Louis Flyerettes squad who beat the always tough Civic Memorial squad to win their regional. These two teams squared off on Tuesday night at Carbondale and it was the Flyerettes who took the lead early and beat the Lady Lions 53-34 to advance to the championship game on Thursday night. Photo: Byron Hetzler, The Southern The Carterville Lady Lions were the number one seed of the IHSA Regional.  The Lady Lions were playing the number five seed for the Regional Final.  The Lady Lions trailed the Murphysboro Lady Red Devils at the end of three quarters.  The Lady Lions turned up the defense in the fourth quarter and take the lead at the 6:05 mark and go on to win their second regional championship in a row 50-44. Photo: Christopher Kays - The Southern The Carterville Lady Lions rolled through the first three games of the 2017 Rangerette Christmas Classic at Benton High School.  In the first game the Lions beat Union County HS 55-14 and in game two knocked off the Christopher Lady Bearcats 66-32. Friday night the Lions found themselves taking on the number one team in Class 2A, the Lady Bulldogs from Harrisburg. The Lions were within two with just under three minutes to play, but the Bulldogs put them away late in the 65-54 win to earn the Rangerette Christmas Classic Championship.
